Introduced to the Norse Settlers of Iceland by way of the Vikings in the 9th century AD. These landrace birds became a common fowl throughout the island for centuries. Íslenska landnámshænan which translates "Icelandic hen of the Settlers." During the 50's the breed was almost extinct. Flocks that exist today are are descended from small groups preserved during the 70's. Smaller than standard largefowl, Icelandics are a hardy breed of modest table quantity; providing medium size white eggs. This breed is more nervous and flighty, and do very well on free range. There is a wide variety in plumage pattern. Leg color can be either yellow, willow, or slate. Comb types can be either single or rose, with white ear lobes. Both hen and cock are crested.

Our line of Icelandics began from well known lines out of Harvey Ussery, and David Grote. From the start, we have bred to continue their high standard of this rare landrace breed. Our "CornerStone" flock has been since closed to outside lines, but maintains a well diverse genetic pool. Select cocks and hens are housed in separate breeding pens, and all eggs for our incubators and yours are marked to each breeding pen. This is beneficial for keeping the next generations genetically diverse. When available, started and mature birds can be shipped indicating separate genetics.

Please note: This breed in not recognize by the American Poultry Association.

CornerStone Farm is not a commercial poultry hatchery. We hatch quality over quantity. This practice offers sales of select young and mature fowl. We do not ship day old birds, however, birds less than 5 weeks to day old can be picked up at the farm.
